About the Children at Risk Rankings
Children at Risk is a Houston-based nonprofit that publishes annual school rankings for every public school in Texas. Their methodology for middle schools focuses on three factors: student achievement (how students perform on state assessments), student growth (how much students improve over time), and campus performance relative to poverty (how the school does compared to schools with similar demographics statewide). College readiness is also factored in at the middle and high school level.
A school’s grade ranges from A+ down to F, and its Texas rank places it among all middle schools statewide. To build this list, we pulled every middle school from Austin ISD, Round Rock ISD, Leander ISD, Lake Travis ISD, Eanes ISD, Hays CISD, Dripping Springs ISD, Pflugerville ISD, Thrall ISD, and Wimberley ISD — and ranked them by overall performance. Charter schools that appeared in the top rankings are noted below but excluded from the main list.
The real estate data below covers closed sales in each school’s attendance zone over the past 12 months and reflects single-family residential properties only. Price per square foot and home size data are based on a 3-year window for a larger, more statistically reliable sample.
What Changed in the 2024-2025 Rankings
This year’s update brings meaningful movement across the top 25. Seven schools improved their grade, two declined, four schools are new to the list, and four schools from last year’s list have been removed.
Stiles Takes the Top Spot
The biggest story this year is Stiles Middle School in Leander ISD, which jumps from #6 all the way to #1 in the Austin metro. Stiles held its A grade while outpacing every other school in the Central Texas rankings, making it the clear standout in the 2024-2025 data. Canyon Vista, previously #1, drops to #2 — still an excellent school in an excellent zone, just no longer first.
Notable Grade Improvements
Five schools earned grade improvements this year. Canyon Ridge (Leander ISD) and Lake Travis Middle (Lake Travis ISD) both jumped from B+ to A — the most significant grade changes on the list, reflecting strong academic progress in Steiner Ranch and the broader Lake Travis corridor. Bee Cave Middle, Thrall, and Pearson Ranch each improved from A- to A. Lamar Middle School in Austin ISD made the biggest positional move of any school, climbing eight spots from #22 to #14 while also improving its grade from B to B+.
Grade Declines
Two schools declined in grade this year. Sycamore Springs Middle School (Dripping Springs ISD) dropped from A- to B+, sliding from #10 to #12. Ridgeview (Round Rock ISD) declined from B+ to B, dropping from #16 to #18.
Three Leander ISD Schools Join the List
Cedar Park Middle School, Knox Wiley Middle School, and Four Points Middle School are all new to the list this year with B+ grades from Children at Risk. Their addition brings Leander ISD’s total representation to five schools — the most of any district on this list. It reflects continued academic strength and enrollment growth across Cedar Park, Leander, and the Four Points/River Place corridor.
Hudson Bend Middle School Added
Hudson Bend Middle School in Lake Travis ISD joins the list at #25 with a B grade. It replaces Richards School for Young Women Leaders, which was removed from this list because Richards is an application-based magnet school rather than a traditional attendance-zone school. You can’t buy a home to guarantee enrollment there — admission is district-wide and by application — so it’s not useful as a school zone guide for home buyers.
Schools That Left the List
Dahlstrom Middle School (Hays CISD) and Danforth Middle School (Wimberley ISD) both dropped to C+ grades and are no longer in the top 25. Dripping Springs Middle School fell out of the top 25 rankings despite holding a B grade, displaced by the higher-ranked Leander ISD additions.
A Note on Charter Schools
Two charter schools ranked in the Children at Risk Central Texas top 10 for middle schools but are not included below: Harmony Science Academy (#5 in Central TX) and Meridian World School (#6 in Central TX). This list focuses on traditional public schools with defined attendance zones. Charter schools use open enrollment — any student can apply regardless of home address — so they’re not useful for buyers choosing a neighborhood based on school zoning. If you’re researching all your options, Harmony and Meridian are worth noting, but admission is by lottery and availability varies year to year.
