It was the first school in Texas to earn the National Wildlife Federation’s Eco-Schools USA Green Flag and is a national Green Ribbon school. In 2025-26, Small enrolled 1,233 students, with 26.5% economically disadvantaged, 14.2% emergent bilingual and 21.8% receiving special education services, according to TEA data. For 2026-27, as part of a district initiative to align middle school schedules, Small moved from an 8-period A/B block to a straight 8-period day. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.

In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Small Middle School earned an overall A with a score of 92. Small has moved between A and B ratings: a B (89) in 2021-22, an A (90) in 2022-23 and a B (85) in 2023-24.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): A (92)

- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Small’s A is carried by Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, which rose from 91 to an A (92), and by Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, at an A (91). School Progress held at a B (87), with Academic Growth at 87 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, up from a C (79) to a B (85). Small earned Comparative Academic Growth and Comparative Closing the Gaps distinctions in 2021-22 and none since, and it is not identified for state improvement support.
