Since relocating to Austin, rodeo season has quickly become one of our favorite times of year. The first year we lived in Austin, we wanted to experience something truly Texas. So, we thought, how much more Texas can you get than the rodeo? Ever since, we’ve had the rodeo bug and the event is something we block out on our calendar every year.
Rodeo Season Spans February and March
For about 6 weeks in February and March, the Texas Rodeo takes center stage in Austin, San Antonio and Houston. The Official Sport of Texas, the rodeo is more than just an 8-second ride. The total rodeo experience is a combination of state fair, big time concert and Texas culture you can’t get anywhere else.
Rodeo Austin
Where weird meets western, Rodeo Austin is a truly unique rodeo unlike any other in Texas. But, traditionalist rodeo fans shouldn’t be alarmed. The “weird” is only because Rodeo Austin is located in Austin and, as you well know, we like to keep everything weird here. Although Rodeo Austin is a lot smaller than the San Antonio and Houston Rodeos, it still packs just as much fun and entertainment. Because of the smaller venue, there is not a bad seat in the house. You’re right on top of the action and the auditorium seems to amplify the crowd and the excitement.
Rodeo Austin is a Top 10 ProRodeo in the US
Rodeo Austin has grown exponentially since its meager beginnings back in 1938. What started as a stock show featuring 16 animals, has turned into one of the Top 10 ProRodeos in the US. Top ranked athletes from all over the world compete for the Championship in their respected event. What we get as fans is two hours of non-stop, extreme competition with a range of events from bull riding to steer wrestling.
Undeniably, the Best Event at Every Rodeo
You also will see our favorite, and most enduring event, Mutton Bustin. If you’ve never seen the event, you are missing out. If you have, you know there is nothing better than watching a 6-year hang on to a sheep for dear life for the chance to be crowned Mutton Bustin Champion of the World….well, at least Champion for the night.
Much More than the Nightly Rodeo Event
In addition to the rodeo, there’s the livestock show, the thrill of Austin’s largest carnival, artery clogging fair food and non-stop music. Over 15 days, Rodeo Austin hosts more than 130 live performances spotlighted by its concert series. Award-winning recording artists from Texas Country to Rhythm and Blues take the stage nightly. This year’s lineup includes Willie Nelson, Eli Young Band, Lee Brice, Martina McBride, Kevin Fowler, Boyz II Men, and Tyler Farr to name a few.
