Charles Akins, the first African American teacher at desegregated Johnston High School and the first principal of the new L.C. Anderson High School in 1973. It now operates as Akins Early College High School, organized into career-focused academies. In 2025-26, Akins enrolled 2,354 students, with 61.0% economically disadvantaged, 33.2% emergent bilingual and 19.1% receiving special education services, according to TEA, and a student-teacher ratio of 15.8 to 1. Carman De Leon-Wissel is principal for 2026-27. A $17.9 million 2022 bond project is underway: a new secure entry vestibule opened for 2026-27, a modular building is being installed in fall 2026, and upgraded CTE spaces, a school mental health center, a turf football and soccer field and building system upgrades are coming. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Akins Early College High School earned an overall C with a score of 79. That is the same score it earned in 2024-25 and 2023-24. Akins was a B (87) in 2021-22 and a C (77) in 2022-23.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): C (79)
- Student Achievement: B, 80 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance, college, career and military readiness, and graduation rate)
- School Progress: B, 82 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/77, Relative Performance B/82)
- Closing the Gaps: C, 73 out of 100

- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. For high schools, Student Achievement combines STAAR results with college, career and military readiness (CCMR) and graduation rates. Akins earned a B (80) in Student Achievement in 2025-26, and its CCMR score was 90 for the second year in a row, matching 2021-22. School Progress was a B (82), driven by Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 82. Academic Growth improved from a D (69) to a C (77). What holds the overall grade at a C is Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups and was a C (73) for the second straight year. Akins earned three distinction designations in 2021-22 (ELA/Reading, Postsecondary Readiness and Comparative Closing the Gaps) and none since. The campus is not identified for state improvement support.
