Things to Do: Austin Roller Derby Girls

April 6, 2011 By Chris Williamson

The display sign advertising the roller derby always catches my eye whenever I drive by the Palmer Event Center. I always say, “that’s something we should do,” but it seems to never enter my mind when I’m making plans for the weekend. I have heard from clients about how surprisingly fun the derby is, so this Sunday I’m going to check it out for myself. Not knowing that much about the derby, here is what I found.

Austin Roller Derby Rules

Although there seems to be a lot of strategy and rules that go into the game, here it is quick and simple: Roller Derby takes place on an oval track where the offense and the defense race around simultaneously. Each team is made up of 1 Jammer and 4 Blockers. The key is for the Jammer to race around the track scoring every time she laps an opponent. It looks like the girls can hit, kick, elbow and do just about anything to get their Jammer around the track as many times as possible.

Austin Roller Derby Teams

The names of the teams are just as colorful and unique as the costumes and the players themselves. Players names like Cherry Chainsaw and Yeti Mecheti may give you an idea of what you’re in store for. The teams that are part of the TXRD-Lonestar Rollergirls are:

  • Cherry Bombs
  • Hellcats
  • Holy Rollers
  • Putas Del Fuego
  • Rhinestone Cowgirls
  • Hired Gun$
  • All-Scar Army
  • Travel Team

10th Anniversary of Roller Girls in Austin

This year will mark the 10th anniversary of the roller girls in Austin. They have quickly become a staple to the “Keep Austin Weird” scene and have been on numerous lists as a must do in Austin. I’m looking forward to an action packed night and will be posting pictures and comments on our blog. If you have been to the derby before….I would love to here your thoughts and anything I should know before I go.
