July 26, 2017 By Rebecca Jacks

If you’ve been considering relocating to Austin, you’ve probably done your research on all the awards the city has won recently. From Best Places to Live in the U.S. in 2017 and America’s Next Boom Town to Top City to Start Over and Best City to Buy a Home, Austin is raking in the awards this year. Austin named #6 best big city to live in by WalletHub.

WalletHub, a personal finance website, recently came out with their list of the Best Big Cities to Live In. You can read the full article here.

Austin Named #6 of 2017’s Best Big Cities to Live In

First off, it’s probably worth noting that Austin was considered a “Big City” to even be in these rankings. That’s a great step for a city that was not so long ago a large town. If you’ve ever talked to an Austinite about their city, you’ll probably hear about the great weather, killer tacos and laid-back residents. But aside from those benefits, the city can now boast about some pretty solid facts. Almost 1.9MM people now enjoy an average salary of $49,560 and an average monthly rent of only $1,044. The strength of Austin’s job market was noted in the study as Austin rated #3 for economy and #5 for highest income growth.

Texas Had 7 Metros in the Top 50

El Paso (25th), Arlington (30th), Fort Worth (33rd), San Antonio (35th), Dallas (43rd), Corpus Christi (47th) and Houston (49th) were all in the top 50. Why? Strong job markets and (relatively) low cost of living are driving migration to the state of Texas. Combine that with sunshine and Tex-Mex and it is not surprising why Texas is the state to beat.

What Factors Were Considered?

Austin named #6 best big city to live in using the following criteria. According to the report, “WalletHub’s analysts compared a sample of 62 U.S. cities (with populations of more than 300,000 each) across five key dimensions: 1) Affordability, 2) Economy, 3) Education & Health, 4) Quality of Life, and 5) Safety.”

Considering Relocating to Austin?

Though Austin has grown tremendously in the past several years, projections are it will continue to grow for years to come. Austin is going to truly be a world class city once all of the planned improvements are complete. And, housing prices are still affordable when you compare them to other booming tech areas.
