Knowles serves a diverse student body, shaped in part by the dual language and bilingual early childhood programs it houses. In 2024-25, about 51% of students were emergent bilingual, about 46% were economically disadvantaged, about 26% received special education services, and about 9% were identified as gifted and talented. Knowles is a Title I campus. Keep in mind that the GreatSchools rating above and the TEA accountability rating below measure different things, so the two can tell somewhat different stories.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
Knowles Elementary received a D (60) in the Texas Education Agency’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, down from a C (70) in 2024-25. Student Achievement, which is based on STAAR results, was a D (62), compared with a D (64) the year before. School Progress, which measures how much students grew from one year to the next, fell from a C (70) to an F (58). Closing the Gaps, which tracks how each student group performs against state targets, fell from a C (70) to an F (56). TEA builds the overall score mainly from the better of Student Achievement and School Progress, so the 2024-25 C reflected stronger student growth that year. In 2026, TEA also identified Knowles for Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI), a federal school-improvement designation; campuses with this designation put a school improvement plan in place. Knowles had not been identified for a federal designation in the prior three years. Over the longer run, Knowles earned C ratings in 2018-19, 2022-23 and 2024-25 and a D in 2023-24, and it was labeled Not Rated in 2021-22. For comparison, Leander ISD as a whole earned a B (87).
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): D (60)
- Student Achievement: D (62)
- School Progress: F (58)
- Closing the Gaps: F (56)
- Federal Designation: Comprehensive Support and Improvement (2026)
- Prior Overall Ratings: C (70) in 2024-25, D (66) in 2023-24, C (78) in 2022-23, Not Rated in 2021-22 (scaled score of 69), and C (77) in 2018-19 (no ratings were issued for 2019-20 or 2020-21)
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. The 2022-23 and 2023-24 ratings were delayed by litigation over TEA’s methodology and were not released until 2025. For 2021-22, Senate Bill 1365 labeled campuses that scored below a C as Not Rated rather than assigning a D or F. Because Knowles houses large Pre-K and early childhood programs, the STAAR-based ratings reflect only its students in 3rd through 5th grade.
