Armando Chapa Middle School was named in 2006 for Armando Chapa, who joined Hays CISD as a special education counselor in 1974, became principal of Hays Middle School in 1975, opened Kyle Middle School (now Wallace Middle School) in 1986 and retired in 2004 after 12 years as a counselor at Barton Middle School. In 2025-26, Chapa enrolled 769 students, with 69.6% economically disadvantaged, 23.4% emergent bilingual, 20.9% receiving special education services and 6.9% identified as gifted and talented, according to TEA. Its student-to-teacher ratio of 14.4 to 1 in 2024-25 was the lowest among Hays CISD’s middle schools. Dr. Lisa Walls, who says she is in her 21st year as a principal, leads the campus in 2026-27, and district projections show the zone growing from about 879 resident middle schoolers in 2026-27 to about 1,016 by 2030-31. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.

Chapa earned distinctions in ELA/Reading and Comparative Academic Growth in 2021-22 and none since. TEA identified the campus for additional targeted support in 2025-26, a federal designation based on results for specific student groups; it had been identified for targeted support in 2021-22 and was not identified in the three years between.
