Paredes Middle School is closed. The Austin ISD board voted on July 30, 2026 to close the campus at 10100 S. Mary Moore Searight Dr. immediately, less than three weeks before the 2026-27 school year started, after it received a fourth straight preliminary F rating from the Texas Education Agency. No home is zoned to Paredes anymore. Students who lived in the former Paredes zone now attend Mendez Middle School if they live east of Bluff Springs Road and north of Slaughter Lane, and Bailey Middle School otherwise. What Happened to Paredes Middle School?
Paredes opened in 2000 and was named for Américo Paredes, the Mexican American scholar and folklorist. It served 6th through 8th grade in Southwest Austin’s 78748 zip code and had 593 students in its final year, 2025-26. About 82.6% of those students were economically disadvantaged, 36.9% were emergent bilingual and 31.2% received special education services.
The campus struggled in the state’s accountability system for several years. Under Texas law, a school that receives five straight failing ratings must be closed or placed under a state-appointed board of managers, and Paredes was closed after its fourth. Austin ISD reassigned all Paredes staff within the district.

- 2022-23: F (47)
- 2023-24: F (50)
- 2024-25: F (59)
- 2025-26: F (51), preliminary
Bailey Middle School took over Paredes’ state-approved Turnaround Plan, and in September 2026 TEA transferred Paredes’ rating history to Bailey. Austin ISD lists Paredes among its “legacy schools” (2000-2026). We did not find any announced plan for the Paredes building.

Where Former Paredes Students Go Now
The reassignment is by home address. Families east of Bluff Springs Road and north of Slaughter Lane go to Mendez. Everyone else in the former Paredes zone goes to Bailey. The closure also changed plans for students from the former Bedichek Middle School zone who had been reassigned to Paredes in the November 2025 consolidation plan; they follow the same address rule. Austin ISD provides transportation for reassigned students who live more than two miles from their new school.
