As a more diverse population continues to relocate to the Austin area, so does the demand for a high quality private education. Currently there are more than 300 private schools in the Austin Metro area (includes Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander, San Marcos) serving more than 12,000 students. The educational landscape includes large, elite academies, college preparatory schools and parochial schools of varying sizes. Parents have a wealth of options when it comes to the private schools in the area. The cost to attend also cover a wide spectrum, with tuition costs ranging from $3600 to well over $20,000 a year.
How Do My Kids Apply to these Austin Private Schools?
Although each school has their own requirements and application process, below are some general steps when in comes to applying to Austin private schools.
Step 1. Meet with the School – The first step would be to schedule a private tour with all schools you have interest in. Yes, you will get plenty of recommendations from your friends, family, co-workers and/or church, but the only way you’re to get a feel for the school is to experience the school/community for yourself. Most schools will want you to set up a private tour and also attend any open houses the school will hold. An open house will allow you to meet/interact with other parents/children that attend.
Step 2. Open an Admission File – Once you find a fit, the next step is to open an admission file. You will submit an application and pay for any fees that apply. Other information a school may need include; birth certificate, teacher/principal letters, other recommendation letters and/or student academic reports.
Step 3. Testing – Most schools will require a student to take an academic/development assessment test. This could include a specialized test designed for the specific school and/or The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). The Admission Office of each school will detail any and all testing that is required.
Step 4. Interview – Once the application and testing is complete, most schools will schedule individual interviews. Depending on the grade level of your child, this could include a private interview with your child, with parents or both. This is the time for all unanswered questions to take place between the school, parents and child.
