Enrollment and the Consolidation Review
Steiner Ranch Elementary’s enrollment has fallen from a peak of 573 students in 2019-20 to 378 in 2025-26, a drop of about 34%. In December 2025 the Leander ISD board adopted enrollment thresholds that trigger a formal review of small campuses: under 500 students, and a stricter line at under 400. Steiner Ranch falls below 400. The district studied closing the school for 2026-27 and splitting its students between Laura Welch Bush and River Ridge elementaries, a move estimated to save about $700,000 a year.
On December 17, 2025, after strong opposition from Steiner Ranch families, the board voted not to consolidate Steiner Ranch Elementary for 2026-27. The school is open and operating normally this year. The same vote directed the administration to develop consolidation scenarios for 2027-28 within the Vandegrift High School feeder pattern, if enrollment warrants, along with a districtwide look at grade-span models such as K-8. Those scenarios had not been published as of October 2026. Leander ISD is also running a 10-year planning process, Leander ISD 2037, with priorities going to the board in December 2026 and recommendations due by May 2027.
If you are buying in this zone with young children, the school’s 2027-28 status is the one open question worth watching. We’ll update this page when the district publishes its scenarios.

Steiner Ranch is a small Leander ISD elementary with small classes and experienced teachers, who average 12.5 years in the classroom. In 2025-26, about 20% of students were identified as gifted and talented, about 16% received special education services, about 10% were emerging bilingual students, and about 15% were economically disadvantaged. The school is named for the historic Steiner Ranch, the rodeo-stock ranch “Buck” Steiner began assembling in the 1940s, and it stands where the ranch foreman’s house and barn once were. The building received an 85,000-square-foot interior renovation that was completed in 2021. Keep in mind that the GreatSchools rating above and the TEA accountability rating below measure different things, so the two can tell somewhat different stories.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
Steiner Ranch Elementary received an A (90) in the Texas Education Agency’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, matching its A (90) from 2024-25. Student Achievement, which reflects how students scored on STAAR, rose to an A (93) from an A (91). School Progress, which measures year-over-year growth, slipped from an A (91) to a B (86), and Closing the Gaps eased from a B (86) to a B (82). The campus also earned two TEA distinction designations in 2025-26, for academic achievement in ELA/Reading and in Science, and it is not identified for any federal improvement support. For comparison, Leander ISD as a whole earned a B (87).
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): A (90)
- Student Achievement: A (93)
- School Progress: B (86)
- Closing the Gaps: B (82)
- Distinctions (2025-26): Academic Achievement in ELA/Reading and in Science
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (90) in 2024-25, B (88) in 2023-24, B (82) in 2022-23, A (90) in 2021-22, and A (91) in 2018-19 (no ratings were issued for 2019-20 or 2020-21)
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. The 2022-23 and 2023-24 ratings were delayed by litigation over TEA’s methodology and were not released until 2025. The 2022-23 dip to a B (82) was driven by School Progress and Closing the Gaps; the school has climbed back each year since.
