Austin High opened on September 14, 1881, and is the oldest continuously operating public high school in Texas. After seven moves around the central city it settled on its present campus on Lady Bird Lake, dedicated in 1975, and the school still marks that anniversary each year with Dedication Day and its Hall of Honor. In 2025-26, Austin High enrolled 2,292 students, with 23.1% economically disadvantaged, 8.3% emergent bilingual and 13.1% receiving special education services, according to TEA. A $41.9 million Phase 2 modernization under the 2022 bond is under way: renovated art studios opened in fall 2026, a new secure west main entrance was built in summer 2026, and a new music and theatre building replacing the east breezeway is expected in spring 2027. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Austin High earned an overall A with a score of 92. That is up 3 points from a B (89) in 2024-25. Austin High was an A (90) in 2021-22, then a B in each of the next three rated years, scoring 88 in 2022-23 and 89 in both 2023-24 and 2024-25.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): A (92)
- Student Achievement: A, 90 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance, college, career and military readiness, and graduation rate)
- School Progress: A, 92 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/77, Relative Performance A/92)
- Closing the Gaps: A, 92 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (90) in 2021-22, B (88) in 2022-23, B (89) in 2023-24, B (89) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. For high schools, Student Achievement combines STAAR results, college, career and military readiness (CCMR) and graduation rates, and Austin High held an A (90) there in 2025-26 after a 92 the year before. Its CCMR score reached 99, up from 98 in 2024-25 and 86 in 2022-23. School Progress rose from a B (88) to an A (92), driven by Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 92. Academic Growth was lower, a C (77), though up from 70 in 2024-25 and 69 in 2023-24. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, jumped from a B (82) to an A (92), and that is the main reason the overall grade returned to an A. Austin High earned distinctions in ELA/Reading, Comparative Academic Growth and Postsecondary Readiness in 2021-22 and none in the years since. The campus is not identified for state improvement support.

TEA issues updated ratings annually, so verify the current rating directly with Austin ISD or TEA before making a decision based on it.
