Home to Texas State University, San Marcos used to be a college town. Fast forward to today and San Marcos has grown into one of faster growing suburbs of Austin. Known for its affordability, San Marcos is located just 30 miles south of Austin and 50 miles north of San Antonio. Because of its proximity to both metros, San Marcos can sometimes be a choice for residents who work in both cities. The population was just under 45,000 at the 2010 census and has grown to just over 67,000 as of the 2020 census. Residents are drawn to San Marcos also due to its many water formations and rivers, giving plenty of options for summer outdoor recreation. Housing is also affordable, especially when you compare what you can buy in San Marcos versus what you can buy in Austin, or even the suburbs closer to Austin. San Marcos is a better choice for someone who wants to live in the Austin area, but wants to be in a thriving suburb versus surrounded by farmland.
