Plain is named for Jim Plain, Leander ISD’s longtime deputy superintendent, who built the district’s school construction program. In 2024-25, about 9.7% of students were identified as gifted and talented, about 21.2% received special education services, about 24.0% were economically disadvantaged, and about 14.9% were emergent bilingual. Keep in mind that the GreatSchools rating above and the TEA accountability rating below measure different things, so the two can tell somewhat different stories.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
Plain Elementary received a C (72) in the Texas Education Agency’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, down from a C (76) in 2024-25. Student Achievement, which is based on STAAR results, held steady at a C (73). School Progress, which measures how much students grew from one year to the next, fell from a C (75) to a D (68). Closing the Gaps, which tracks how each student group performs against state targets, fell from a C (77) to a D (69). TEA also identified Plain for Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) in 2026, a federal school-improvement designation based on the performance of individual student groups; campuses with this designation put a targeted improvement plan in place. Over the longer run, Plain earned a C (75) in 2018-19, B ratings in 2021-22 and 2022-23, and C ratings in each of the last three years. For comparison, Leander ISD as a whole earned a B (87) in 2025-26.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): C (72)
- Student Achievement: C (73)
- School Progress: D (68)
- Closing the Gaps: D (69)
- Federal Designation: Targeted Support and Improvement (2026)
- Prior Overall Ratings: C (76) in 2024-25, C (75) in 2023-24, B (83) in 2022-23, B (87) in 2021-22, and C (75) in 2018-19 (no ratings were issued for 2019-20 or 2020-21)
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. The 2022-23 and 2023-24 ratings were delayed by litigation over TEA’s methodology and were not released until 2025. The 2024-25 enrollment included Pre-K 4 students who moved to the Ada Mae Faubion School for Early Childhood in 2026-27, so the student body today is somewhat different.

High Gabriel is split, with High Gabriel West zoned to Plain and High Gabriel East zoned to North. Always check the current zone for a specific address rather than relying on a listing’s school field.
