Ojeda opened on August 18, 2003 as John P. Ojeda Junior High, Del Valle ISD’s second junior high, and was dedicated on September 8, 2003. It is named for John Ojeda, a longtime Del Valle resident who was the first Hispanic trustee elected to the district’s school board and served three consecutive terms beginning in 1986. In 2025-26, Ojeda enrolled 714 students, with 89.2% economically disadvantaged, 51.7% emergent bilingual and 21.1% receiving special education services, according to TEA data. Ruishi Wang is principal for 2026-27, and the board considered new associate principal hires for the campus between July and September 2026. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Ojeda Middle earned an overall F with a score of 53. That is down 13 points from a D (66) in 2024-25. The campus was a C (72) in 2021-22, then an F in 2022-23 (51) and 2023-24 (57) before improving to a D last year.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): F (53)
- Student Achievement: F, 56 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: D, 60 out of 100 (Academic Growth F/56, Relative Performance D/60)
- Closing the Gaps: F, 38 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: C (72) in 2021-22, F (51) in 2022-23, F (57) in 2023-24, D (66) in 2024-25
- Del Valle ISD (2025-26): D (66) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. The main reason for Ojeda’s drop was Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups: it fell from a C (74) in 2024-25 to an F (38) in 2025-26. School Progress held at a D (60), with Academic Growth slipping from a D (60) to an F (56) and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at a D (60). Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, was an F (56), within the 53 to 57 range it has stayed in since 2022-23. TEA identified Ojeda for comprehensive support and improvement in 2025-26. It was also identified for comprehensive support in 2022-23, was listed as a comprehensive support progress school in 2023-24, and was identified for targeted support in 2021-22 and 2024-25. Ojeda has not earned distinction designations in any of these years.

TEA issues updated ratings annually, so verify the current rating directly with Del Valle ISD or TEA before making a decision based on it.

Ojeda Middle Attendance Zone Map
Ojeda’s zone covers the western side of Del Valle ISD in Southeast Austin. About 72% of the zone’s home sales since September 2022 were in the 78744 zip code and about 18% in 78610, with most of the rest in 78741 and 78747. For 2026-27 it takes in the Baty zone, most of the Hillcrest zone, the southwest part of the Smith zone, and most of the Creedmoor and Newton Collins zones. The Frontier Valley area of Hillcrest and the SH 71 corridor part of Smith go to Dailey Middle, and the eastern part of Creedmoor and the Elroy area of Newton Collins go to Del Valle Middle.
Del Valle ISD’s two proposals for 2027-28 middle school zones had not been adopted as of October 2, 2026. Option A would move the Baty Elementary area west of US 183 (East Riverside Drive, Grove Boulevard, Pleasant Valley Road, Oltorf Street and Montopolis Drive) from Ojeda to Dailey Middle School. Option B would keep that area at Ojeda and add a small area east of US 183 between East Riverside Drive and Ben White Boulevard (Frontier Valley Drive and Vargas Road) from Dailey. For high school, most of Ojeda’s zone would stay with Del Valle High when North Del Valle High School opens in Fall 2028, but Option A would send the Smith Elementary area south of Ben White (Burleson Road, Stassney Lane, McKinney Falls Parkway and Nuckols Crossing Road) to North Del Valle, and Option B would send the Riverside and Montopolis area instead. Rising 8th graders may finish at their current middle school under the district’s grandfathering policy. Confirm any address with the Del Valle ISD school finder before buying.
