Galindo Elementary opened in 1989 and is named for Emma H. Galindo, a teacher and community figure. The campus calls itself a Green Global school, with goats, a monarch butterfly garden and honeybees on site. In 2025-26, before the Dawson and Becker students arrived, Galindo enrolled 368 students, with 89.9% economically disadvantaged, 60.9% emergent bilingual and 41.0% receiving special education services, according to TEA, and a student-teacher ratio of 7.5 to 1. For 2026-27 its principal, Natascha Barreto-Romero, describes Galindo as a consolidating campus that brings together three school communities, so enrollment will be considerably larger. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Galindo Elementary earned an overall B with a score of 80. That is up 3 points from a C (77) in 2024-25. Galindo was a B in 2021-22 (87) and 2022-23 (83), dropped to an F (59) in 2023-24, and has improved in each year since.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): B (80)
- Student Achievement: C, 71 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: C, 79 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/79, Relative Performance C/79)
- Closing the Gaps: B, 82 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: B (87) in 2021-22, B (83) in 2022-23, F (59) in 2023-24, C (77) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Galindo’s B is carried by Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups and was a B (82) in 2025-26, close to its 83 the year before. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, rose from a D (69) to a C (71). School Progress improved from 75 to a C (79), with Academic Growth and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, both at 79. Galindo earned no distinction designations from 2021-22 through 2025-26. TEA identified it for comprehensive support and improvement in 2023-24, and in 2025-26 it is no longer identified on its own record.
The 2026-27 picture is more complicated. Dawson Elementary’s state-mandated turnaround plan is being carried out at Galindo, and in September 2026 the state transferred Dawson’s history of unacceptable ratings to Galindo, one of six Austin ISD receiving schools affected. That means Galindo’s accountability status going forward is more serious than its own recent ratings suggest.

The 2022-23 and 2023-24 ratings were delayed by litigation and released in 2025. TEA issues updated ratings annually, so verify the current rating directly with Austin ISD or TEA before making a decision based on it.

Galindo Elementary Attendance Zone Map
Galindo’s 2026-27 zone combines three areas: its long-standing zone around the campus on S. Second St., the entire former Dawson Elementary zone, and the part of the former Becker Elementary zone that was not assigned to Zilker. Together they cover older South Austin neighborhoods including Bouldin, Cherry Hills, Brinwood, Loma Linda, Colonial Trails, Greenwood Hills, Battle Bend Springs, La Perla, Garden Villa Estates, Oak Ridge Heights and Garden Oaks. The reassigned Dawson and Becker areas now account for more of the zone’s home sales than Galindo’s original area does.
Austin ISD’s October 2025 draft also proposed moving Galindo-zoned homes south of Ben White to St. Elmo Elementary, but that change was not adopted. Austin ISD plans Phase 1 boundary changes for 2027-28, with a board vote expected in fall 2026, and a district-wide boundary and feeder realignment for fall 2028, so confirm any address with Austin ISD’s school finder before buying.

Of the zone’s 445 sales since September 2022, 276 were in the areas reassigned from Dawson and Becker, and only 177 listings in the zone were tagged to Galindo in MLS (172 were tagged Dawson and 90 Becker), so the MLS school field lags the new boundaries.
