Doss was built in 1970 and named for Leona Doss, an Austin teacher from 1927 to 1967 who loved painting owls, which is why the owl is the school mascot. Austin ISD replaced the original building with a new $45 million campus under the 2017 bond; students moved in on October 5, 2020, and the building earned LEED Gold certification in 2022. The new building was designed for about 870 students, and Doss enrolled 934 in 2025-26, making it one of the largest elementary schools in Northwest Austin. That year 17.8% of students were economically disadvantaged, 16.8% were emergent bilingual and 15.4% received special education services, according to TEA. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Doss Elementary earned an overall B with a score of 89. That is up 1 point from a B (88) in 2024-25. Doss was an A campus in 2021-22 (96) and 2022-23 (90), and has been a B since 2023-24 (89).
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): B (89)
- Student Achievement: A, 92 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: B, 80 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/79, Relative Performance B/80)
- Closing the Gaps: B, 81 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (96) in 2021-22, A (90) in 2022-23, B (89) in 2023-24, B (88) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, remains Doss’s strongest domain, an A (92) in 2025-26 and an A every year shown. School Progress was a B (80), with Academic Growth at a C (79) and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at a B (80). Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, improved from a C (78) to a B (81). Growth and gap scores are what have kept Doss at a B since its 2021-22 high of 96. The campus earned distinction designations in 2021-22, including ELA/Reading, Mathematics and Comparative Closing the Gaps, and none since, and it is not identified for state improvement support.
