Enrollment and Leander ISD Planning
Laura Bush is a smaller campus than it used to be. State data reported by the Texas Tribune shows 502 students in 2025-26, down about 40% since 2016, as Steiner Ranch has matured and fewer young families have moved in. For 2026-27, Leander ISD placed Laura Bush in its under-500 enrollment group for elementary staffing. That can mean fine arts or other specials teachers and library services are shared with a partner campus. The district says no programs are being eliminated, though some classes may meet on a modified schedule.
Leander ISD has also been studying school consolidations to cut costs. In December 2025, the board decided not to close Steiner Ranch Elementary for 2026-27. The original proposal would have moved its students to River Ridge and Laura Bush. The board asked district staff to come back with consolidation and grade-span options for 2027-28 across the Vandegrift feeder pattern, which includes Laura Bush. As of October 2026, we have not seen any published scenarios. If you are buying in Steiner Ranch, follow Leander ISD’s board updates, because a decision could change which school some Steiner Ranch streets attend.

Laura Bush opened in fall 2002 as Leander ISD’s 11th elementary school. It is named for Laura Welch Bush, a Midland native, former public school teacher and librarian, and First Lady from 2001 to 2009. Mrs. Bush attended the school’s dedication in August 2002 and donated books to its library. Principal Staci Cordell took over in 2026 after five years as principal of Faubion Elementary. About 5.6% of Laura Bush’s students were economically disadvantaged in 2025-26, one of the lowest shares in the district. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
