Hornsby-Dunlap traces its roots to the rural Hornsby Bend area, and the Hornsby-Dunlap Common School District was annexed into Del Valle ISD in 1967. The campus website dates the school to 1920, while other sources trace the Hornsby school district to 1906. In January 2023 the school moved into a new 103,000-square-foot building with room for about 800 students, funded by Del Valle ISD’s November 2019 bond and built directly behind the 1960 building it replaced, which had been the district’s oldest campus. In 2025-26, Hornsby-Dunlap enrolled 712 students, with 89.3% economically disadvantaged, 42.3% emergent bilingual and 16.7% receiving special education services, according to TEA. Melissa Kender is the new principal for 2026-27, after the Board approved her hiring on June 16, 2026. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Hornsby-Dunlap Elementary earned an overall C with a score of 78, the same grade and score as in 2024-25. That C followed two years at a D (69) in 2022-23 and 2023-24, and the campus was Not Rated in 2021-22 under Senate Bill 1365. Del Valle ISD as a whole earned a D (66) in 2025-26.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): C (78)
- Student Achievement: D, 65 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: C, 79 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/79, Relative Performance C/72)
- Closing the Gaps: C, 75 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: Not Rated in 2021-22, D (69) in 2022-23, D (69) in 2023-24, C (78) in 2024-25
- Del Valle ISD (2025-26): D (66) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Hornsby-Dunlap’s overall rating is driven by School Progress, which held at a C (79) for the second year in a row. Academic Growth stayed at 79, and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, rose from 70 to 72. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, improved from 62 to 65 but remains a D. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, was a C (75), down 1 point from 76. The gains since 2022-23 are large: that year Student Achievement (53) and Relative Performance (55) were both F, Academic Growth was a D (68), and TEA identified the campus for targeted support and improvement. It has not been identified for improvement support since, and it has earned no distinction designations in its rated years.

Hornsby-Dunlap Elementary Attendance Zone Map
Hornsby-Dunlap’s current zone covers the Hornsby Bend side of eastern Travis County. Of the 372 single-family sales tied to the school since September 2022, 326 were in the 78725 zip code and 43 in 78724. The largest groups of sales are in the many sections of Austin’s Colony, followed by Chaparral Crossing, Elm Park, Prado Ranch and Hornsby Glen. The zone also includes Santiago Estates, Garden Valley Village and the Hornsby Bend area.
Del Valle ISD took community feedback on two rezoning proposals through April 30, 2026, and as of October 2, 2026 no board adoption had been found. Hornsby-Dunlap’s elementary boundary stays the same under both Option A and Option B. The change is in its feeder pattern. Under both options, the northern, residential part of the zone (Austin’s Colony, Hornsby Glen, Chaparral Crossing, Prado Ranch, Santiago Estates, Garden Valley Village and the Hornsby Bend area) would keep feeding Dailey Middle School and then move to North Del Valle High School when it opens in Fall 2028. A southern, more rural part of the zone would move to Del Valle Middle School and Del Valle High School, with the middle school change taking effect in Fall 2027 if adopted. Under the grandfathering policy the Board adopted in February 2026, 8th graders may finish at their current middle school, juniors and seniors stay at their current high school, and sophomores may ask to stay if space allows, though transportation is generally not provided. Confirm any address with the Del Valle ISD school finder before buying.
