The building is a joint venture between Austin ISD and the City of Austin and is shared with the St. John Community Center, a community clinic, a recreation center and a public library. In 2025-26, Pickle enrolled 349 students, with 98.3% economically disadvantaged, 84.0% emergent bilingual and 24.9% receiving special education services, according to TEA. For 2026-27, Pickle has a new principal, Kara Schultz, and is implementing a state-mandated turnaround plan with added staffing and academic supports. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Pickle Elementary earned an overall F with a score of 55. That is down 1 point from an F (56) in 2024-25 and its third straight F, after an F (50) in 2023-24. Pickle was a D (69) in 2022-23 and a B (84) in 2021-22.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): F (55)
- Student Achievement: F, 51 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: F, 57 out of 100 (Academic Growth F/57, Relative Performance F/53)
- Closing the Gaps: F, 51 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: B (84) in 2021-22, D (69) in 2022-23, F (50) in 2023-24, F (56) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. All of Pickle’s 2025-26 domain scores were in the F range. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, held at 51. School Progress slipped from a D (60) to an F (57), with Academic Growth at 57 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 53. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, improved from 46 to 51 but remained an F. TEA identified Pickle for comprehensive support and improvement in 2023-24 and reidentified it in 2024-25 and 2025-26. Because of two years of unacceptable ratings, Pickle is implementing a state-mandated turnaround plan in 2026-27. The campus earned no distinction designations in the years shown.
