McBee opened in the 2000-01 school year and is named for Frank McBee, a founder of Tracor, the first Austin-headquartered company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and his wife Sue Brandt McBee, a philanthropist who immigrated from Germany as a child. In 2025-26, McBee enrolled 300 students, with 94.7% economically disadvantaged, 79.7% emergent bilingual and 21.7% receiving special education services, according to TEA. Austin ISD lists a school mental health center on campus. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, McBee Elementary earned an overall B with a score of 80. That is up 11 points from a D (69) in 2024-25. McBee was an A (90) in 2021-22, then a D for three straight rated years, scoring 65 in 2022-23, 66 in 2023-24 and 69 in 2024-25.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): B (80)
- Student Achievement: D, 64 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: B, 80 out of 100 (Academic Growth B/80, Relative Performance C/72)
- Closing the Gaps: B, 81 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (90) in 2021-22, D (65) in 2022-23, D (66) in 2023-24, D (69) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. McBee’s jump to a B came from growth and student-group results rather than raw test scores. School Progress rose from a C (73) to a B (80), driven by Academic Growth at 80, and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, climbed from an F (53) to a C (72). Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, improved from a D (67) to a B (81). Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, is still McBee’s weakest area at a D (64), though it was up from an F (51). McBee earned a Comparative Academic Growth distinction in 2021-22 and none since. TEA identified the campus for additional targeted support in 2024-25, and it is not identified for improvement support in 2025-26.

TEA issues updated ratings annually, so verify the current rating directly with Austin ISD or TEA before making a decision based on it.
