Mathews opened in 1916 in the Clarksville area and is named for Dr. William J. Mathews, a physician and early Austin school board member. Its original building was designed by architect Dennis R. Walsh, and the Texas Historical Commission designated the school a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2006. In 2025-26, Mathews enrolled 377 students, including 21 sixth graders, with 31.3% economically disadvantaged, 12.7% emergent bilingual and 20.2% receiving special education services, according to TEA. Austin ISD’s November 2025 plan ended 6th grade at Mathews, Blazier and Lee after 2025-26, so rising 6th graders now go to O. Henry Middle School or apply to transfer. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Mathews Elementary earned an overall A with a score of 91. That is down 5 points from an A (96) in 2024-25. Mathews has been an A campus in four of the last five rated years, scoring 95 in 2021-22 and 91 in 2022-23, with a B (87) in 2023-24.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): A (91)
- Student Achievement: A, 92 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: A, 91 out of 100 (Academic Growth A/91, Relative Performance B/86)
- Closing the Gaps: A, 90 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (95) in 2021-22, A (91) in 2022-23, B (87) in 2023-24, A (96) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Mathews earned A ratings in all three domains in 2025-26. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, held at 92. School Progress eased from 96 to an A (91), with Academic Growth at 91 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at a B (86). Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, slipped from 95 to an A (90). The lower growth and student-group scores account for the 5-point drop. Mathews earned three distinction designations in 2021-22, including ELA/Reading and Comparative Academic Growth, and none since, and it is not identified for state improvement support.

Mathews Elementary Attendance Zone Map
Mathews’ zone covers older Central Austin neighborhoods in 78703 around the campus, including Clarksville, Division Z, Maas Addition, Shelley Heights, Terrace Park, Silliman, Raymond, Enfield and Washington Heights. It is a small zone for single-family homes, with 101 sales since September 2022. The zone did not change for 2026-27. Austin ISD’s October 2025 drafts proposed closing Bryker Woods and sending most of its students to Mathews and moving Barton Hills students west of MoPac to Mathews, but Bryker Woods stayed open and boundary changes were set aside.
Those ideas could come back. Austin ISD plans Phase 1 boundary changes for 2027-28, with a board vote expected in fall 2026, and a district-wide boundary and feeder realignment for fall 2028, so confirm any address with Austin ISD’s school finder before buying.
Homes Zoned to Mathews Elementary: Market Stats
The figures below cover single-family homes sold through Unlock MLS whose addresses fall inside Mathews Elementary’s 2026-27 attendance zone, based on Austin ISD’s official SY 2026-27 boundary map, not the school typed into each listing. The largest groups of sales were in Division Z, Maas Addition, Shelley Heights, Terrace Park, Clarksville and the Enfield sections. The zone has only 21 to 30 sales a year, so medians can shift with the mix of homes that sell.
