Dobie opened in 1973 and is named for J. Frank Dobie, the University of Texas folklorist known as the Storyteller of the Southwest. The campus received a Phase 1 modernization under Austin ISD’s 2022 bond, with a budget of $36,843,000, and its building has also served as swing space for Wooldridge Elementary during that school’s rebuild. In 2025-26, Dobie enrolled 392 students, with 94.6% economically disadvantaged, 70.9% emergent bilingual and 23.2% receiving special education services, according to TEA data. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Dobie Middle School earned an overall D with a score of 62. That is up 3 points from an F (59) in 2024-25 and ends a run of F ratings: 51 in 2022-23, 46 in 2023-24 and 59 in 2024-25. Dobie was not rated in 2021-22 under Senate Bill 1365.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): D (62)
- Student Achievement: F, 50 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: D, 60 out of 100 (Academic Growth D/60, Relative Performance F/53)
- Closing the Gaps: D, 68 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: Not Rated (Senate Bill 1365) in 2021-22, F (51) in 2022-23, F (46) in 2023-24, F (59) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Dobie’s move to a D came from School Progress, which rose from an F (54) to a D (60) as Academic Growth improved to 60. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, was still an F (50), and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, was an F (53). Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, slipped from a C (70) to a D (68). Dobie has not earned any distinction designations in recent years. TEA identified it for comprehensive support and improvement in 2023-24, and for 2025-26 it is identified for additional targeted support. The D pauses state penalties for a year, but Austin Current reported that Dobie remains among the Austin ISD campuses at risk of state intervention.
