Burnet opened in north central Austin in 1961 and was among the first Austin ISD middle schools to offer two-way dual language, starting in 2015. The campus is being fully modernized at its current site under the 2022 bond, with a total project budget of $158,055,000. In 2025-26, Burnet enrolled 688 students, with 94.0% economically disadvantaged, 71.7% emergent bilingual and 26.4% receiving special education services. The bigger change for 2026-27 is who runs the school: Austin ISD and the Texas Council for International Studies ended their planned partnership to manage Burnet, Dobie and Webb as of July 31, 2026, after TEA rejected the partnership’s benefits in May, so Austin ISD operates Burnet directly this year. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Burnet Middle School earned an overall F with a score of 59. That is up 5 points from an F (54) in 2024-25, but still below the passing line. Burnet was also an F in 2022-23 (55) and 2023-24 (57), and it was not rated in 2021-22 under Senate Bill 1365.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): F (59)
- Student Achievement: F, 53 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: F, 57 out of 100 (Academic Growth F/56, Relative Performance F/57)
- Closing the Gaps: D, 64 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: Not Rated (Senate Bill 1365) in 2021-22, F (55) in 2022-23, F (57) in 2023-24, F (54) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Burnet’s scores rose in every domain in 2025-26, but not enough to leave the F range. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, went from 50 to 53 after three straight years at 50. School Progress rose from 54 to 57, with Academic Growth at 56 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 57. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, improved from an F (55) to a D (64). Burnet has earned no distinction designations since 2022-23.
TEA identified Burnet for comprehensive support and improvement in 2024-25, and in 2025-26 it is a comprehensive support and improvement progress school. The 2025-26 F is a preliminary fifth consecutive F rating. If it becomes final, which is expected in December 2026, state law requires the education commissioner to either close the campus or replace Austin ISD’s board with a board of managers. The district has appealed the rating.

The 2022-23 and 2023-24 ratings were delayed by litigation and released in 2025. TEA issues updated ratings annually, so verify the current rating directly with Austin ISD or TEA before making a decision based on it.
