Brown is named for Timothy Alvin Brown, principal of Pease Elementary from 1892 to 1933. The original school was completed in September 1957 and dedicated in 1958. That building closed in 2016 because of structural problems and was torn down, and a new campus funded by the 2017 bond opened on the same site in January 2020, bringing together the T.A. Brown and Webb Primary school communities. It was designed as Austin ISD’s first Green School and earned LEED Gold certification. In 2025-26, Brown enrolled 419 students, with 94.3% economically disadvantaged, 75.9% emergent bilingual and 12.4% receiving special education services, according to TEA. The student-teacher ratio was 11.6 to 1. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Brown Elementary earned an overall C with a score of 72. That is up 13 points from an F (59) in 2024-25. Brown was a B (84) in 2021-22, then fell to a D (66) in 2022-23 and an F (48) in 2023-24.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): C (72)
- Student Achievement: F, 51 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: C, 71 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/71, Relative Performance F/53)
- Closing the Gaps: C, 73 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: B (84) in 2021-22, D (66) in 2022-23, F (48) in 2023-24, F (59) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Brown’s C comes from School Progress, which rose from an F (57) to a C (71) as Academic Growth improved to 71. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, is still an F at 51, though up from 43 in 2024-25, and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, was an F (53). Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, improved from a D (67) to a C (73). Brown earned no distinction designations from 2021-22 through 2025-26.
Because Brown was rated unacceptable two years in a row, it is under a state-mandated turnaround plan. The Austin ISD board approved the plan in November 2025 and TEA approved it on January 23, 2026; its strategy is intensive curriculum and instruction improvements, and a December 2025 change to state law made carrying it out mandatory. TEA identified Brown for comprehensive support and improvement in 2023-24, and in 2025-26 the campus is identified for targeted support and improvement.

TEA issues updated ratings annually, so verify the current rating directly with Austin ISD or TEA before making a decision based on it.
