Barton Hills Elementary opened in 1964 and celebrated its 60th birthday in September 2024. Principal Kathryn Achtermann has led the campus since July 2000. In 2025-26, Barton Hills enrolled 271 students, with 7.7% economically disadvantaged, 1.1% emergent bilingual and 25.8% receiving special education services, according to TEA, and 13.3% were identified as gifted and talented. The student-teacher ratio was 12.5 to 1. Austin ISD’s October 2025 draft plan would have moved Barton Hills homes west of MoPac to Mathews Elementary, but the board’s November 2025 plan dropped that change, so nothing about the campus changed for 2026-27. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Barton Hills Elementary earned an overall A with a score of 95. That is up 7 points from a B (88) in 2024-25. Barton Hills was an A in 2021-22 (96) and 2022-23 (92), then slipped to a B in 2023-24 (89) and 2024-25 (88) before returning to an A.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): A (95)
- Student Achievement: A, 94 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: A, 95 out of 100 (Academic Growth A/95, Relative Performance B/84)
- Closing the Gaps: A, 95 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (96) in 2021-22, A (92) in 2022-23, B (89) in 2023-24, B (88) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, has been steady at Barton Hills, at 93 or 94 every year since 2021-22, and was an A (94) in 2025-26. What moved the overall score was School Progress, which rose from a C (79) to an A (95) as Academic Growth jumped from 70 to 95. Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, was a B (84). Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, also climbed from a C (77) to an A (95). Barton Hills earned three distinction designations in 2021-22 (ELA/Reading, Comparative Academic Growth and Comparative Closing the Gaps) and none in the years since. The campus is not identified for state improvement support.

Barton Hills’ zone covers the Barton Hills neighborhood and its many sections, along with Horseshoe Bend, Barton Terrace, Barton Hills West, West Park Addition, Ridgewood Village, Bluffington, Stratford Place and Stratford Heights, all in 78704 and nearby West Austin. Each Austin ISD listing was geocoded and matched to Austin ISD’s SY 2026-27 Barton Hills Elementary attendance boundary, so the figures reflect today’s zone rather than the school typed into each listing.
The median sale price in the Barton Hills zone rose from $1,400,000 in 2022-23 to $1,578,750 over the trailing twelve months, an increase of about 12.8%. Median price per square foot moved the other way, from $703.01 to $613.74 (-12.7%), because the median home sold grew from 2,137 to 2,662 square feet. Larger homes are selling, not higher prices per foot.
Sales volume rose from 44 homes in 2022-23 to 66 in the past twelve months, after a low of 35 in 2023-24. Median days on market went from 34 to 41 days, and sellers received a median of 93.7% of their final list price over the past year, compared with 94.2% in 2022-23. Those sale-to-list ratios are low for Austin, so expect negotiation on price.

The median active list price of $2,474,500 is far above the trailing-twelve-month median sale price of $1,578,750, and active listings have been on the market a median of 101 days, so many of the higher-priced listings are sitting.
