Danforth is named for Susie Sophia Brooks Danforth (1876 to 1979), a Wimberley Valley teacher and principal who began teaching in one-room schoolhouses in the 1890s and retired in 1947. Susie B. Danforth Middle School opened in 1985 for grades 5 through 8 as part of Hays Consolidated ISD. After Wimberley formed its own district in 1986, the campus served the upper grades, including high school, until the current Wimberley High School opened on Carney Lane on August 25, 1997 and 6th grade moved to Danforth. A 2009 renovation added a library, an enlarged computer lab, two classrooms and a second gym. TEA’s 2025-26 accountability listing counts 583 students, with 25.0% economically disadvantaged. In 2024-25 the campus had 639 students, with 8.1% emergent bilingual students, 16.6% receiving special education services, 9.9% in gifted and talented and 14.9 students per teacher. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, Danforth earned an overall B with a score of 89, up 3 points from a B (86) in 2024-25. Its recent ratings have stayed in a narrow range: B (86) in 2021-22, A (90) in 2022-23 and B (88) in 2023-24.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): B (89)
- Student Achievement: A, 90 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: B, 83 out of 100 (Academic Growth B/83, Relative Performance C/77)
- Closing the Gaps: B, 85 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: B (86) in 2021-22, A (90) in 2022-23, B (88) in 2023-24, B (86) in 2024-25
- Wimberley ISD (2025-26): B (87) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. In 2025-26, Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, was an A (90). School Progress was a B (83), with Academic Growth at 83 and Relative Performance at a C (77), and Closing the Gaps was a B (85). Even with those scores, TEA identified Danforth for additional targeted support in 2026, the first time the campus received that label. The designation is based on one student group: emergent bilingual students’ Closing the Gaps scaled score was 30, below the cut point of 57. Danforth earned no distinctions in 2024-25 or 2025-26, after earning five in 2023-24 (ELA/Reading, Science, Social Studies, Top 25% Comparative Academic Growth and Postsecondary Readiness).

TEA issues updated ratings annually, so verify the current rating directly with Wimberley ISD or TEA before making a decision based on it.
Programs at Danforth Junior High

- Athletics: Boys and girls athletics compete as the Texans and share a coaching staff with Wimberley High School.
- Fine arts: Band, choir and the Texan Starlettes dance team. The 2025 bond is expanding the DJH band hall and building a shared Fine Arts Center with choir and theater classrooms.
- Clubs and activities: Cheer, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Freedom Canines International, Junior National Honor Society, T.E.X.A.N. Roots Club, UIL Academics and yearbook.

Expect construction around the campus through spring 2028 from the $135 million bond Wimberley ISD voters approved on May 3, 2025, including a new Fine Arts Center, a band hall expansion, a new weight room, science classroom renovations and gym upgrades. For 2026-27, the Carney Lane entrance to Danforth is closed during Fine Arts Center construction, so families use Texan Boulevard or a one-way route from Green Acres Drive behind Texan Stadium at drop-off and pick-up.
