Wallace traces its roots to Jack C. Hays Junior High, created at consolidation in 1967, whose students chose the Ranger mascot. Kyle students moved to the current West Center Street campus in 1986 as Kyle Middle School, which became Kyle Intermediate in 1993 and Laura B. Wallace Middle School in 1999. Laura Belle Wallace taught for the former Kyle school district for more than 26 years. In 2025-26, Wallace enrolled 871 students, with 46.8% economically disadvantaged, 12.7% emergent bilingual, 22.2% receiving special education services and 11.7% identified as gifted and talented, according to TEA. Joanne Carlisle is principal, and district projections show the zone growing from about 967 resident middle schoolers in 2026-27 to about 1,169 by 2030-31. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.

- Hays CISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Wallace scored a C in every domain in 2025-26. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, was 77. School Progress was 75, with Academic Growth at 75 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 72. The small drop came from Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups and fell from 76 to 71. Wallace earned a Science distinction in 2021-22 and none since. TEA identified the campus for targeted support and improvement in 2021-22 and 2022-23, and it has not been identified since.
