Sunfield is Hays CISD’s 15th elementary school. Voters approved it in the May 2021 bond, and it opened in August 2022 as the first campus built on the district’s next-generation elementary prototype, a 117,611-square-foot building on 16.5 acres designed for 900 students. In 2025-26 it enrolled 964 students, with 26.9% economically disadvantaged, 14.8% English learners, 20.5% receiving special education services and 8.3% identified as gifted and talented. Even after the January 2026 rezoning, the district projects about 1,022 students for 2026-27, or 114% of the building’s capacity. Lauren Ibe, last year’s assistant principal, is in her first year as principal. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Sunfield Elementary earned an overall B with a score of 82. That is up 6 points from a C (76) in 2024-25. Sunfield opened in August 2022, so its first rating was for 2022-23, a B (81), followed by a C (76) in 2023-24 and another C (76) in 2024-25.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): B (82)
- Student Achievement: B, 85 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: C, 79 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/79, Relative Performance D/69)
- Closing the Gaps: C, 75 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: B (81) in 2022-23, C (76) in 2023-24, C (76) in 2024-25
- Hays CISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Sunfield’s B in 2025-26 is driven by Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, which rose from a C (75) to a B (85). School Progress was a C (79), with Academic Growth at 79 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at a D (69), up from an F (58) the year before. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, slipped from 78 to 75 and remains a C. Sunfield has not earned distinction designations in its rated years, and it is not identified for state improvement support.

Sunfield Elementary Attendance Zone Map
For 2026-27, Sunfield’s zone is essentially the Sunfield master-planned community in Buda (78610), including its many phases and sections. In January 2026 the Hays CISD board moved planning units 44, 45, 46, 48, 49 and 50 from Sunfield to Buda Elementary. That change covers Turner’s Crossing, the area south of Turner’s Crossing and Toll 45, and undeveloped land north of the existing Sunfield subdivision along Toll 45, and those same areas moved from McCormick to Dahlstrom Middle School. Current students in the moved areas may stay at Sunfield through 5th grade, but without district bus service.
Sunfield is still expected to stay over capacity until relief arrives. Hays CISD’s funded 18th elementary school, southeast of the Sunfield subdivision, is projected to open around August 2028, and a 4th high school and 7th middle school are now planned for 2030, so expect more boundary changes.
