Science Hall opened in 2006 with Dr. Angela Nelson as its first principal. It is named for Science Hall, a farming community east of present-day I-35 that grew up around Science Hall Academy, founded in 1876 on the Andrews family’s land; the community faded after the railroad bypassed it in 1881, and the academy closed in the 1920s. In 2025-26 the school enrolled 666 students, with 75.4% economically disadvantaged, 38.6% English learners, 20.4% receiving special education services and 4% identified as gifted and talented. Alejandra Valdez is the principal. Hays CISD has closed the campus’s two-way dual language academy to new students, so in 2026-27 the remaining academy students are 5th graders finishing the program. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Science Hall Elementary earned an overall C with a score of 73. That is up 4 points from a D (69) in 2024-25. The campus has moved between C and D since a B (81) in 2021-22: it scored a D (69) in 2022-23, a C (75) in 2023-24 and a D (69) in 2024-25.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): C (73)
- Student Achievement: D, 67 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: C, 73 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/73, Relative Performance C/70)
- Closing the Gaps: C, 73 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: B (81) in 2021-22, D (69) in 2022-23, C (75) in 2023-24, D (69) in 2024-25
- Hays CISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Science Hall’s overall rating comes from School Progress, which was a C (73) in 2025-26, with Academic Growth at 73 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 70. Relative Performance was the biggest improvement, up from an F (59) in 2024-25. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, rose from 64 to 67 but remains a D, and Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, improved from a D (69) to a C (73). The campus has not earned any distinction designations in the years shown. TEA identified Science Hall for targeted support and improvement in 2024-25, and for 2025-26 it is identified for additional targeted support. Both labels relate to the performance of specific student groups, not the overall grade.

Programs at Science Hall Elementary
These are the programs Hays CISD and the Science Hall campus list for this school. The campus site publishes little about clubs or after-school care, so ask the school directly if a specific program matters to you.
- Pre-K: Free, full-day Pre-K for 4-year-olds (age 4 by Sept. 1, 2026) who live in Hays CISD and meet state eligibility guidelines. Science Hall Elementary is on the district’s 2026-27 list of state-funded Pre-K campuses; the district’s tuition-based Community Pre-K is not offered at this campus.
- Bilingual and dual language: Science Hall is a Hays CISD bilingual campus (marked BIL on the district’s Pre-K list) offering the district’s one-way dual language program, which starts in Pre-K through 2nd grade and grows to Pre-K through 5th. The former two-way dual language academy is closed to new enrollment.
- Spanish enrichment: In 2025-26 Hays CISD listed Science Hall as one of four elementary schools offering a Spanish enrichment class to all students as part of the specials rotation.
- Gifted and Talented: Identified G/T students at Science Hall are served through Hays CISD’s elementary model, which provides services through differentiation in a cluster classroom.
- PTA and volunteers: The campus has a PTA and welcomes parent volunteers through the district’s VIPS program.
The two-way dual language academy at Science Hall is closed to new students, so families interested in dual language should ask about the one-way program, which is the option still open to new enrollees.
