Dr. T.C. McCormick Jr. Middle School opened in August 2016 as Hays CISD’s sixth middle school. It is named for Dr. T.C. McCormick Jr., a Buda physician and former mayor of Buda who served on the Buda school board, worked to desegregate his medical practice and the Buda schools, and delivered between 1,600 and 1,800 babies. In 2025-26, McCormick enrolled 1,272 students, with 49.8% economically disadvantaged, 22.2% emergent bilingual, 19.8% receiving special education services and 9.4% identified as gifted and talented, according to TEA. Amanda Richason became principal in January 2026 after James Cruz moved to Lehman High School. McCormick is Hays CISD’s most crowded middle school: even after the rezoning, the district projects 1,344 students in 2026-27, about 109% of its 1,236-seat capacity. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.

McCormick Middle Attendance Zone Map
McCormick’s 2026-27 zone includes Sunfield, Southgrove, Prairie Lakes, Porter Country, Shadow Creek, Stonefield, the Meadows at Kyle, Stoneridge, Green Meadows and Meadow Park. In January 2026 the Hays CISD board moved Turners Crossing and nearby land north of Sunfield along SH 45 (planning units 44, 45, 46, 48, 49 and 50) from McCormick to Dahlstrom. Officials said the change buys about a year: the district still projects McCormick above 125% of capacity by 2029-30, and its zone growing to about 1,653 resident middle schoolers by 2030-31.
Four portable classrooms placed at McCormick in 2025 are to stay until Hays CISD’s 7th middle school opens, now planned for 2030 after the 2026-27 budget delayed it a year; construction still needs a future bond vote, expected in 2027. The 4th high school is also planned for 2030, and the 18th elementary school is expected around August 2028. In 2025 the district pointed McCormick families toward Dahlstrom or Chapa through its Hays Choice transfer program.
