The roughly 413,500-square-foot campus cost about $122 million and is named for William M. “Moe” Johnson, Hays CISD’s first superintendent (1967 to 1984), and his wife Eugenia “Gene” Johnson, who wrote the district’s history. In 2025-26, Johnson enrolled 2,974 students, the most of any Hays CISD high school, with 33.1% economically disadvantaged, 14.2% emergent bilingual, 13.3% receiving special education services and 9.2% identified as gifted and talented, according to TEA. Its student-to-teacher ratio of 19.7 to 1 in 2024-25 was the highest of the district’s high schools. Rob Hensarling is principal, and an Air Force JROTC program starts in August 2026. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
