Lehman (2004) and Johnson (2019) high schools later took parts of its zone. The longtime Rebels mascot was retired after 2020-21, and the school became the Hawks in 2021-22; varsity football is played at Bob Shelton Stadium. In 2025-26, Hays High enrolled 2,322 students, with 36% economically disadvantaged, 9.6% emergent bilingual, 15.4% receiving special education services and 11% identified as gifted and talented, according to TEA. For 2026-27, Joe Mitchell, a former Hays High and Wallace Middle assistant principal who most recently led Goodnight Middle School in San Marcos CISD, is the new principal, and the Hawks move up from Class 5A to 6A. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
