Eric Dahlstrom Middle School opened in 1985 on land donated by developer Jack Dahlstrom Sr. in honor of his father, and it is named for Eric and Dodie Dahlstrom, who moved to the family ranch off FM 1626 in 1933. A 2021-bond fine arts wing with a band hall and music rooms was dedicated in October 2023 to Leroy Gerdes, Dahlstrom’s original band director. In 2025-26, Dahlstrom enrolled 778 students, with 17.5% economically disadvantaged, 1.9% emergent bilingual, 19.4% receiving special education services and 13.4% identified as gifted and talented, according to TEA; its economically disadvantaged and emergent bilingual shares were the lowest of any Hays CISD middle school. With the new Turners Crossing area, the district projects 779 students in 2026-27, about 63% of the building’s 1,243-seat capacity. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Dahlstrom Middle School earned an overall B with a score of 87. That is down 2 points from a B (89) in 2024-25. Dahlstrom has been a B or better in every rated year since 2021-22, scoring 89 in 2021-22 and 2022-23 and earning an A (91) in 2023-24.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): B (87)
- Student Achievement: A, 91 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: B, 82 out of 100 (Academic Growth B/82, Relative Performance C/70)
- Closing the Gaps: C, 78 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: B (89) in 2021-22, B (89) in 2022-23, A (91) in 2023-24, B (89) in 2024-25
- Hays CISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Dahlstrom’s strongest domain is Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, which earned an A (91) in 2025-26 and has scored 90 or higher in every rated year since 2021-22. School Progress was a B (82), with Academic Growth at 82 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at a C (70), up from a D (60) the year before. The decline came from Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups and fell from a B (85) to a C (78). Dahlstrom did not earn distinction designations in these years, and the campus is not identified for state improvement support.

Dahlstrom Middle Attendance Zone Map
Dahlstrom’s 2026-27 zone covers the northwest part of Hays CISD, including the Hill Country areas west of Buda (78610), with neighborhoods such as Carpenter Hill, Garlic Creek, Garlic Creek West, Whispering Hollow, Leisurewoods, White Oak Preserve, Elm Grove, La Ventana, Coves of Cimarron, Cimarron Park and Cullen Country. In January 2026 the Hays CISD board moved Turners Crossing and nearby land north of Sunfield along SH 45 and I-35 (planning units 44, 45, 46, 48, 49 and 50) from McCormick to Dahlstrom to relieve crowding at McCormick. The district projected about 25 middle schoolers from those areas in 2026, growing to about 250 by 2035. Current students there may stay at McCormick through 8th grade, but without bus service.
Even after the change, Dahlstrom is projected at only 63% to 73% of capacity through 2030-31, so it has room to grow. Hays CISD expects its 18th elementary school to open around August 2028, and the 2026-27 budget pushed its 7th middle school and 4th high school to 2030. Older listings in Turners Crossing may still show McCormick, so confirm any address with Hays CISD’s interactive attendance zone map before buying.
Homes Zoned to Dahlstrom Middle: Market Stats
The figures below cover single-family homes sold through Unlock MLS whose addresses fall inside Dahlstrom Middle School’s 2026-27 attendance zone, based on Hays CISD’s official 2026-27 attendance zone map (which includes the January 2026 rezoning), not the school typed into each listing. That means Turners Crossing sales are counted here for all four years, even though the area was zoned to McCormick until 2026-27. Turners Crossing has the most sales, followed by Carpenter Hill, Garlic Creek West, Whispering Hollow and White Oak Preserve. The housing stock is older than in the other Hays CISD middle school zones: the median home sold was built in 2014, and 35.9% of sales since September 2022 were homes built in 2022 or later.
