Buda Elementary traces its roots to an 1885 schoolhouse in downtown Buda. The building that became Buda High School burned in 1928 and was rebuilt, and it became Buda Elementary when the Kyle, Buda and Wimberley schools consolidated in 1967. Because the old downtown site sits in a floodplain, Hays CISD built a new 115,000-square-foot campus on Old San Antonio Road with about $33.9 million from the 2017 bond, and students moved there in August 2019. In 2025-26, Buda enrolled 608 students; 43.8% were economically disadvantaged, 6.7% were emergent bilingual and 29.9% received special education services. District projections put Buda at 618 students in 2026-27, about 69% of its 900-seat capacity, but show it passing 100% around 2030-31 as Turners Crossing and other areas build out. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Buda Elementary earned an overall C with a score of 79. That is down 8 points from a B (87) in 2024-25. The campus has moved up and down over the past five rated years: an A (91) in 2021-22, then C (79) in 2022-23 and C (74) in 2023-24 before the rebound to a B in 2024-25.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): C (79)
- Student Achievement: B, 80 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: C, 79 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/79, Relative Performance C/77)
- Closing the Gaps: C, 75 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (91) in 2021-22, C (79) in 2022-23, C (74) in 2023-24, B (87) in 2024-25
- Hays CISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Buda’s 2025-26 drop came from School Progress and Closing the Gaps. School Progress fell from a B (86) to a C (79), with Academic Growth at 79 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 77. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, fell from a B (88) to a C (75). Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, actually improved from a C (77) to a B (80). Buda earned a distinction in Comparative Academic Growth in 2021-22 and none since, and the campus is not identified for state improvement support.

The 2022-23 and 2023-24 ratings were delayed by litigation and released in 2025. TEA issues updated ratings annually, so verify the current rating directly with Hays CISD or TEA before making a decision based on it.
Programs at Buda Elementary
These are the programs Hays CISD and the Buda Elementary campus list for this school. The campus website could not be read for this update, so ask the school about clubs, after-school care and PTA activities.
- Pre-K: Hays CISD offers free full-day Pre-K for 4-year-olds (age 4 by Sept. 1) who live in a Hays CISD elementary zone and meet state eligibility guidelines; ask the campus whether its Pre-K classes are on site this year. In 2025 the district said it might move an additional Pre-K class from crowded Sunfield Elementary to Buda Elementary.
- Early Learning Center: Buda Elementary hosts one of Hays CISD’s Early Learning Centers, a child care program for children and grandchildren of district employees, with priority for staff at the host campus.
- Gifted and Talented: Identified students are served through Hays CISD’s Gifted and Talented Services, which at the elementary level uses cluster classrooms with differentiation. TEA counted 8.9% of students as gifted and talented in 2025-26.
- Special education: About 29.9% of students received special education services in 2025-26, well above the district average, which suggests the campus houses one or more district special education programs. Ask the school which programs are on site.
In 2025, Hays CISD said it might move an additional Pre-K class from crowded Sunfield Elementary to Buda Elementary. For current details on Pre-K, special education programs or gifted and talented services, contact Buda Elementary at (512) 295-4431.

Buda Elementary Attendance Zone Map
For 2026-27, Buda Elementary’s zone covers much of Buda and the 78610 zip code around the Old San Antonio Road campus, including Turners Crossing, the Meadows at Buda, White Oak Preserve, Creekside Park, Bradfield Village, the Porch at Du Pre, Sequoyah, Bonita Vista, Ashford Park, Stonewood Commons and part of Buda’s Original Town. In January 2026, the Hays CISD board moved Turners Crossing (planning units 44, 45, 46, 48, 49 and 50) from Sunfield to Buda, moved Persimmon (planning unit 14) to Carpenter Hill and moved the Cole Springs Road area (planning units 20 and 21) to Elm Grove. Current students in the moved areas may stay at their old school through its last grade, but without bus service.
The historic Buda Elementary buildings at 300 N. San Marcos St. and 500 FM 967 are no longer operating schools, and Hays CISD put both up for sale in 2025, so older listings that give 500 FM 967 as the school’s address are out of date. Hays CISD’s 18th elementary school is projected to open around August 2028, and a 4th high school and 7th middle school are now planned for 2030. Homes Zoned to Buda Elementary: Market Stats
The figures below cover single-family homes sold through Unlock MLS whose addresses fall inside Buda Elementary’s 2026-27 attendance zone, based on Hays CISD’s official 2026-27 attendance zone map (which includes the January 2026 rezoning), not the school typed into each listing. That means Turners Crossing is included even though it was zoned to Sunfield until this year. Turners Crossing is the largest source of sales, followed by the Meadows at Buda, White Oak Preserve, Creekside Park and Bradfield Village. New construction is a big part of this market: the median home sold was built in 2022, and about 55% of sales were homes built in 2022 or later.
