Booker T. Washington Elementary occupies the campus of the former Booker T. Washington High School, Elgin’s segregated Black high school, which closed in 1967 after desegregation. The building later housed a middle school before becoming an elementary, and in October 2025 the district honored former Washington High athletes, band members and cheerleaders at Wildcat Stadium. In the 2024-25 rezoning for Harvest Ridge Elementary, the campus was assigned the eastern part of the district. TEA counted 637 students in 2024-25, when the school served kindergarten through 4th grade; with 5th grade back at the elementaries, state data shows 659 students in 2025-26. In 2024-25, 88.4% of students were economically disadvantaged, 63.4% were emergent bilingual students (the highest share among Elgin ISD’s elementaries), 11.5% received special education services and 8.9% were identified as gifted and talented. About 88.5% of students were Hispanic, and the campus had 19.6 students per teacher. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, Booker T. Washington Elementary earned an overall D with a score of 67. That is up 9 points from an F (58) in 2024-25, which itself was up 10 points from an F (48) in 2023-24. The campus scored a D (64) in 2022-23, and in 2021-22 its score of 52 was labeled Not Rated, the label used that year for campuses scoring below 70.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): D (67)
- Student Achievement: F, 56 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: D, 63 out of 100 (Academic Growth D/63, Relative Performance F/56)
- Closing the Gaps: C, 75 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: Not Rated (52) in 2021-22, D (64) in 2022-23, F (48) in 2023-24, F (58) in 2024-25
- Elgin ISD (2025-26): D (66) district-wide, the same as D (66) in 2024-25
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. The biggest gain in 2025-26 came in Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups and rose from a D (64) to a C (75). School Progress improved from an F (56) to a D (63), with Academic Growth at 63 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 56. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, stayed an F (56, up from 55). Elgin ISD as a whole earned a D (66) in both 2024-25 and 2025-26, down from a C (78) in 2021-22.
TEA identified the campus for targeted support and improvement in 2025-26, a designation based on the results of specific student groups. That is a step down in intensity from earlier years, when the campus was identified for comprehensive support (2021-22 and 2023-24) or was working through that process (2022-23 and 2024-25). The 2022-23 and 2023-24 ratings were delayed by litigation and released in 2025. Because 5th grade was at Elgin Intermediate through 2024-25, the 2025-26 rating is the first in this period to include 5th graders at the campus.

The 2022-23 and 2023-24 ratings were delayed by litigation and released in 2025, and in 2022 campuses scoring below 70 were labeled Not Rated under SB 1365. TEA issues updated ratings annually, so verify the current rating directly with Elgin ISD or TEA before making a decision based on it.

Booker T. Washington Elementary Attendance Zone Map
Booker T. Washington’s zone covers the eastern part of Elgin ISD. Outside the campus’s in-town area near Martin Luther King Blvd., it is mostly rural, and more than half of the homes sold in the zone since September 2022 sit on an acre or more. Development notes in the district’s School Zone Finder list a few smaller projects in the zone: Las Alturas (61 lots, building 10 to 20 homes a year), La Selva (49 lots, planned) and Los Prados (145 manufactured-home lots, in infrastructure planning).
The district’s 2026-27 elementary zones use the 2025-26 map dated 12/03/2024, so the boundaries did not change this year. Elgin ISD plans to open Elementary School #6 and Legacy Oak Middle School (grades 6-8, at 1973 FM 1704) in August 2027, and new zones had not been announced as of October 2026, so elementary boundaries and the 6th-grade setup may change for 2027-28. Homes Zoned to Booker T. Washington Elementary: Market Stats
The figures below cover single-family homes sold through Unlock MLS whose addresses fall inside Booker T. Washington Elementary’s current attendance zone, based on the district’s School Zone Finder boundaries. We mapped each sale’s address to the zone rather than using the school typed into the listing, because MLS school tags are often out of date after the 2024 and 2025 rezonings: of the 98 sales in this zone since September 2022, only 65 were tagged Booker T. Washington and 28 were tagged Elgin Elementary. The largest group of sales was in the Arbors at Dogwood Creek, followed by Woodlawn, the original town of Elgin, Las Colinas Estates, Los Senderos, Hillside and Aaron Acres. The median home sold was built in 2001, had about 2,002 square feet and sat on just over an acre, and about 42% of the homes had an HOA.
