Smith opened in August 1972 on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Smith and Miss Annie M. Smith, and a replacement building funded by Del Valle ISD’s November 2019 bond opened in August 2022. Smith was a National Blue Ribbon School in 1996-97, and Children At Risk named it a Gold Ribbon school in 2024 and 2025, one of the top-performing traditional neighborhood schools in Central Texas. Principal Francisca Maldonado has served the school for 29 years as a teacher, testing coordinator and administrator, and no principal or program change was found for 2026-27. In 2025-26, Smith enrolled 580 students, with about 85% economically disadvantaged, 59.3% emergent bilingual and 21.7% receiving special education services; 82.4% of students were Hispanic, according to TEA data. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Smith Elementary earned an overall C with a score of 79. TEA lists the campus as Not Rated in 2024-25, so the closest comparison is 2023-24, when Smith earned a B (86), 7 points higher. Before that, Smith was an A (97) in 2021-22 and a C (79) in 2022-23.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): C (79)
- Student Achievement: C, 72 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: B, 80 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/78, Relative Performance B/80)
- Closing the Gaps: C, 75 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (97) in 2021-22, C (79) in 2022-23, B (86) in 2023-24, Not Rated in 2024-25
- Del Valle ISD (2025-26): D (66) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Smith’s overall rating rests mainly on School Progress, which earned a B (80) in 2025-26, down from a B (88) in 2023-24. Within that domain, Academic Growth fell from 88 to 78 (C), while Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, held near steady at 80 (B) after 82. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, was a C (72), close to the 73 of the two prior rated years. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, dropped from a B (82) to a C (75). The declines in Academic Growth and Closing the Gaps are what moved the overall rating from a B to a C. Smith earned distinction designations in 2021-22, including ELA/Reading, Mathematics, Comparative Academic Growth, Postsecondary Readiness and Comparative Closing the Gaps, and none in the years since. The campus is not identified for state improvement support. For comparison, Del Valle ISD as a whole was rated D (66) in 2025-26.

Smith Elementary Attendance Zone Map
Smith’s current zone reaches from the Williamson Creek and Martinshore areas in the 78744 zip code north toward the Pleasant Valley, Chevy Chase and Riverside areas, plus a mostly non-residential area near SH 71 and the airport that includes the Capitol Manor and Tejas mobile home parks. Of the zone’s 223 home sales since September 2022, 162 were in 78744 and 58 in 78741. The largest groups of sales were in Colorado Crossing, Viewpoint at Williamson Creek, Williamson Creek and Riverside Meadows.
Del Valle ISD released two proposals, Option A and Option B, for elementary and middle school zones that would take effect in Fall 2027. As of October 2, 2026, no board adoption had been found. Both options would move the northern area near SH 71 and the airport, including Capitol Manor and Tejas, to Baty Elementary. Option A would also add the Riverside and East Ben White apartment corridor from Hillcrest Elementary (Riverside Meadows, Frontier Valley, The Villages at Ben White, Park Place at Riverside and nearby complexes), split Smith’s middle school feed between Dailey (Pleasant Valley, Chevy Chase, Lexington Hills and Riverside) and Ojeda (Williamson Creek and Martinshore), and send all of Smith to North Del Valle High School when it opens in Fall 2028. Option B would send all of Smith’s remaining zone to Ojeda Middle School; in Fall 2028 the southern Williamson Creek and Martinshore area would stay with Del Valle High School and the northern Pleasant Valley and Chevy Chase area would go to North Del Valle High School. Students who will be in 5th grade in 2027-28 may finish their final year at their current school, and high school juniors and seniors stay at their current high school. Homes Zoned to Smith Elementary: Market Stats
The figures below cover single-family homes sold through Unlock MLS in Del Valle ISD whose listings are assigned to Smith Elementary in MLS (the MLS school field, with Del Valle ISD as the district). Colorado Crossing, counting its section names, accounts for the largest share, about 78 of the zone’s 223 sales since September 2022, followed by Viewpoint at Williamson Creek and Williamson Creek (about 27 each) and Riverside Meadows (18), with smaller numbers in Eastwood at Riverside, Frontier at Montana, Park Place at Riverside, Sunridge Park and Park East. Some of those Riverside-area sales are tagged to Smith in MLS even though Option A describes that corridor as an area Smith would gain from Hillcrest, so check those addresses carefully. Only 7 of the 223 homes were built in 2022 or later, so this is almost entirely a resale market.
