Hillcrest school was established in 1981 on Crozier Lane in Del Valle and was named for the land it sat on, Hillcrest Farms. It moved to its current campus on East William Cannon Drive, which opened on August 31, 1999. A new security vestibule and front entry were completed in 2023, and the library was renovated with new paint, flooring and ceiling tiles in November 2024. In 2025-26, 85.4% of Hillcrest’s students were economically disadvantaged, according to TEA, down from 89.1% in 2024-25. Zach Beshea has been principal since spring 2022, and no leadership change was announced for 2026-27. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Hillcrest Elementary earned an overall C with a score of 75. That is down 15 points from an A (90) in 2024-25, which itself was a big jump from a D (67) in 2023-24. TEA did not rate Hillcrest in 2021-22 or 2022-23.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): C (75)
- Student Achievement: C, 72 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: C, 79 out of 100 (Academic Growth D/69, Relative Performance C/79)
- Closing the Gaps: D, 66 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: Not Rated in 2021-22, Not Rated in 2022-23, D (67) in 2023-24, A (90) in 2024-25
- Del Valle ISD (2025-26): D (66) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Hillcrest’s overall rating is driven by School Progress, a C (79) in 2025-26. Within that domain, Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, rose from 70 to 79, but Academic Growth fell from an A (91) to a D (69), and that drop is the main reason the overall grade fell from an A. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, also fell, from a B (87) to a D (66). Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, moved the other way, rising from a D (64) to a C (72), its highest score in the rated years. Hillcrest has not earned distinction designations in those years and is not identified for state improvement support.

Programs at Hillcrest Elementary
These are the programs Del Valle ISD and the Hillcrest campus list for this school. Hillcrest’s website mostly links to district programs (fine arts, gifted and talented, ACE after-school, library and counseling) and does not publish campus clubs or a PTA or PTO page, so ask the school directly if a specific program matters to you.
- Two-Way Dual Language: Del Valle ISD offers its Two-Way Dual Language Immersion program at all of its elementary schools, including this one. The program’s first priority is emergent bilingual students learning English; a limited number of seats for incoming Pre-K and kindergarten students who speak a language other than Spanish at home are filled by application after a required parent meeting, and students must attend their zoned campus.
- ACE After-School Program: Hillcrest is one of the campuses with its own registration form for Del Valle ISD’s free ACE after-school program, which runs from dismissal to 6 p.m. for Pre-K through 8th grade with homework help, enrichment, dinner and bus transportation to hub stops. Enrollment priority goes to students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and have an academic need.
- Right At School: Del Valle ISD announced that Right At School, a fee-based on-site enrichment and care program, is available at all of its elementary campuses for 2026-27.
- Fine Arts: Hillcrest lists Del Valle ISD’s fine arts program under its services. At the elementary level the district program emphasizes music and visual arts, and the district has won the Texas Art Education Association District of Distinction award for visual arts several years running.
- Gifted & Talented: Hillcrest lists Del Valle ISD’s gifted and talented program under its services; referrals and nominations for students in grades K-12 go to the campus GT coordinator.
- Bi-literacy Focus: Hillcrest’s published vision is to create a bi-literate, culturally responsive academic foundation with real-world opportunities, built on core beliefs of empathy, equity and excellence.
Right At School’s fee-based care is available at every Del Valle ISD elementary campus for 2026-27, alongside the free ACE program. For current details on Pre-K, dual language seats, gifted and talented services or after-school care, contact Hillcrest Elementary at (512) 386-3550.

Del Valle ISD released two proposals, Option A and Option B, in April 2026, with elementary and middle school changes taking effect in Fall 2027. As of October 2, 2026, no board adoption had been found. Under both elementary options, Hillcrest would gain an area from Creedmoor Elementary along Thaxton Road, Sassman Road, Wende Road and Old Lockhart Highway in the 78747 zip code, near Easton Park. Option A would move the separate Ben White and Frontier Valley section to Smith Elementary, while Option B would keep it at Hillcrest. In both middle school options the entire Hillcrest zone would feed Ojeda Middle School. Under high school Option A all of Hillcrest stays with Del Valle High School; under Option B the main zone stays and the Ben White section would go to North Del Valle High School when it opens in Fall 2028. Students who will be in 5th grade in 2027-28 may finish their final year at their current school. Confirm any address with the Del Valle ISD school finder before buying.
