Lee opened in 1939 and is a National Blue Ribbon School. Originally named for Robert E. Lee, it was renamed on May 23, 2016, when Austin ISD trustees voted 8-1 to honor Russell Lee, a documentary photographer and the first photography professor at UT Austin; the board also named the kindergarten hall for Bettie Mann, the school’s first African American teacher. In 2025-26, Lee enrolled 416 students, including 42 sixth graders, with 17.5% economically disadvantaged, 4.3% emergent bilingual and 19.5% receiving special education services, according to TEA. With 6th grade gone in 2026-27, enrollment is expected to be lower. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating

- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): A (92)

Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Lee scored an A (92) in all three domains in 2025-26. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, has been an A in every rated year since 2021-22. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, was an A (92), close to the 91 it scored in 2024-25. Lee earned distinction designations in 2021-22, including ELA/Reading and Comparative Academic Growth, and none in the years since. The campus is not identified for state improvement support.
