Covington was built in 1986 and is named for Weldon and Verna Covington, Austin ISD band directors whose careers spanned more than 50 years; Verna Covington was the first woman band director in Texas. In 2025-26, Covington enrolled 625 students, with 46.6% economically disadvantaged, 16.0% emergent bilingual and 35.8% receiving special education services. Austin ISD’s documents say Covington would receive about 57% of Bedichek’s students, with the rest split between Paredes and Mendez, so enrollment is expected to grow substantially in 2026-27. Cedric Maddox was confirmed as permanent principal in December 2025. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Covington Middle School earned an overall C with a score of 79. That is up 3 points from a C (76) in 2024-25. Covington has been in the 70s or low 80s in each rated year shown here: a C (78) in 2021-22, a B (80) in 2022-23 and a C (71) in 2023-24.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): C (79)
- Student Achievement: C, 79 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: C, 76 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/76, Relative Performance C/75)
- Closing the Gaps: B, 80 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: C (78) in 2021-22, B (80) in 2022-23, C (71) in 2023-24, C (76) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Covington’s domain scores are close together. Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, rose from 76 to a C (79). School Progress was a C (76), with Academic Growth at 76 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 75. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, improved from a C (75) to a B (80), its best result since 2022-23. Covington earned no distinction designations from 2021-22 through 2025-26. TEA identified it for targeted support and improvement in 2022-23, and it is not identified in 2025-26.
Because Covington absorbed most of Bedichek’s students, Bedichek’s state-mandated turnaround plan is being carried out at Covington in 2026-27, with extra staffing and academic supports. Future ratings will reflect a larger and different student body than the ratings above.
