James Bowie High School opened in the fall of 1988 on 60 acres in Southwest Austin. Austin ISD describes it as the district’s largest comprehensive high school, with more than 200 faculty and staff in 160 classrooms and labs, and it enrolled 2,869 students in 2025-26, the most of any Austin ISD high school. That year 13.5% of students were economically disadvantaged, 5.7% were emergent bilingual and 12.3% received special education services, according to TEA. For 2026-27, Bowie has a new principal, its 2022 bond work is limited to artificial turf and athletic field upgrades, and it plays in UIL District 26-6A with Austin High, Akins, Hays, Johnson, Del Valle and Dripping Springs. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Bowie High School earned an overall A with a score of 95. That is up 2 points from an A (93) in 2024-25 and is Bowie’s highest score in the five rated years shown. Before that, Bowie scored an A (93) in 2021-22, a B (87) in 2022-23 and an A (90) in 2023-24.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): A (95)
- Student Achievement: A, 95 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance, college, career and military readiness, and graduation rate)
- School Progress: B, 89 out of 100 (Academic Growth C/75, Relative Performance B/89)
- Closing the Gaps: A, 94 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (93) in 2021-22, B (87) in 2022-23, A (90) in 2023-24, A (93) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. For high schools, Student Achievement combines STAAR results, college, career and military readiness (CCMR) and the graduation rate, and Bowie earned an A (95) there in 2025-26. Its CCMR score has climbed each year since 2022-23, from 77 to 86, 92 and now 96. School Progress was a B (89): Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, rose to a B (89), while Academic Growth stayed a C (75), the weakest part of Bowie’s report. Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, was an A (94), up from 93. Bowie earned distinction designations in Science and Social Studies in 2021-22 and none in the years since, and the campus is not identified for state improvement support.
