Zilker opened in January 1950 as the first elementary school built in Austin after World War II. It cost $312,000 and started with 270 students and 11 teachers, and it is named for Andrew J. Zilker, who had given a total of $300,000 to the Austin public schools by 1932. In 2025-26, Zilker enrolled 537 students, with 20.1% economically disadvantaged, 4.5% emergent bilingual and 14.9% receiving special education services, according to TEA. Austin ISD’s consolidation impact matrix counts 37 former Becker students reassigned to Zilker for 2026-27, so enrollment is expected to rise somewhat. GreatSchools and TEA measure different things. GreatSchools weighs test results against schools with similar student populations, while TEA’s rating, below, is the state’s official accountability measure.
Academic Performance: Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating
In TEA’s 2025-26 accountability ratings, released in August 2026, Zilker Elementary earned an overall A with a score of 92. That is up 3 points from a B (89) in 2024-25. Before that, Zilker was an A campus in each of the three prior rated years, scoring 94 in 2021-22, 92 in 2022-23 and 91 in 2023-24.
- Overall TEA Rating (2025-26): A (92)
- Student Achievement: A, 92 out of 100 (based on STAAR performance)
- School Progress: B, 86 out of 100 (Academic Growth B/86, Relative Performance B/80)
- Closing the Gaps: A, 91 out of 100
- Prior Overall Ratings: A (94) in 2021-22, A (92) in 2022-23, A (91) in 2023-24, B (89) in 2024-25
- Austin ISD (2025-26): B (81) district-wide
Under TEA’s scale, an A reflects exemplary performance, B is recognized, C is acceptable, D needs improvement, and F is unacceptable. Zilker’s overall rating is carried by Student Achievement, the share of students meeting STAAR standards, which earned an A (92) in 2025-26 after an A (93) the year before. School Progress was a B (86), with Academic Growth at 86 and Relative Performance, which compares results with schools serving similar shares of economically disadvantaged students, at 80. The biggest change was Closing the Gaps, which measures results for student groups, rising from a B (81) to an A (91), and that is what lifted the overall score back to an A. Zilker earned distinction designations in 2021-22, including ELA/Reading and Comparative Academic Growth, and none in the years since. The campus is not identified for state improvement support.
